Leeds goalkeeper Casper Ankergren faces experienced competition at Elland Road following the arrival of 6ft 3in Shane Higgs from Cheltenham.
Oxford-born Higgs, 32, started his career at Bristol Rovers before spending ten years with Cheltenham.
He completed six months at Wolves last season without making a first-team appearance for them.
Higgs’ arrival follows the departure of second-choice Leeds keeper David Lucas.
Further competition is provided by former Motherwell youngster Alan Martin, who spent most of last season on loan to Barrow.
Meanwhile, United manager Simon Grayson has called on supporters to be patient as he chases further summer signings.
Grayson’s only other close-season recruit so far is right back Jason Crowe, 29, who has completed a free transfer from Northampton Town.
On the flip side, Frazer Richardson, Jonathan Douglas, David Lucas, Peter Sweeney and 16-year-old Luke Garbutt have all left.
“If you look at football in general, there have not been many deals done,” said Grayson.
“Everybody is waiting for the Premiership clubs to get their moves sorted out. Then it feeds through to the other leagues and we can go and get our targets.
“There isn’t a lot about the squad that needs changing, though I still feel we need another three or four players.”
