Dog sniffs out tobacco haul

A man has been jailed after a sniffer dog found a large stash of counterfeit tobacco at a storage yard in Pudsey.

The haul was found when Revenue and Customs officers raided the unit in Grangefield Road.

More than 100,000 cigarettes and 56 kilogrammes of hand-rolling tobacco were uncovered.

The excise duty evaded from the seizure was almost £24,000.

Unemployed Arthur Dewar, 54, of Tong Way, Leeds, was this week jailed for seven months at Leeds Crown Court after pleading guilty to three charges of importing and keeping tobacco goods contrary to the Customs and Excise Management Act.

Nick Shaw, of Revenue and Customs, said: "This is an excellent result for all honest traders who have to compete against criminals who undermine local retail businesses by undercutting their prices and evading tax."
