Biography

MP Since - 1987 Majority - 12,810 Born - 26/04/1951, Married, 1 son, 2 daughters.

Education - St Michael's College Upholland College (studied for Catholic Priesthood), Leeds University (BA English as a Mature Student).

Previous Occupation - Ex-National Coordinator for Church Action on Poverty (Ecumenical) - Manchester (ASTMS), Research assistant (1979-83). He has previously worked in a Mental Hospital and on Building Sites. Columnist for The Universe and Catholic Post.

Personal Overview - He has deep concern for poverty and related issues such as Housing and the urban redevelopment of his constituency area. His interests in poverty also extend to the Third World, where he is a member of several connected All Party Country Groups. He is someone who is likely to have strong political convictions, for instance being strongly anti-abortion. He has previously been a member of the Environment Select Committee and Labour's Deputy Environment Spokesman (1992-95). In addition, as an ex-Leeds Councillor he is likely to have some fairly in depth local knowledge. Lost his ministerial status post 2001 election.
